CBSE assigns weightage to Value Education in Board Exams

This academic year onwards, the Central Board of Secondary Education will be assigning 5% of the marks for value education in each of the core subjects in Class Xth and XIIth Board Exams. The questions will be for five marks in a 100-marks paper and for 3-4 marks in a paper of 70-90 marks. Eg- A potential question in Economics is: a father in his will gives 40% each to his son and daughter and 20% to his servant who has been with him for long. Why has he done it and what is the value addition? 8 marks The answer to this would be based upon Gender equality and charity. Besides class Xth and class XIIth, schools have also been asked to select such relevant questions to be asked during the final exams for classes IXth and XIth. The education system in India has been for long under the wrong light for neglecting  the skill and value development of students and making them tunnel-visioned towards  academics. CBSE in recent times has been taking many positive steps to address this concern. School heads have also welcomed the move, saying that the holistic development of a child holds greater importance over only academic development in the long run. Cheers!

Common test for IITs and other engineering courses from 2013

JEE to be combined with AIEEE, 50 % weightage to class XIIth marks A common national level test for admission to engineering courses across the country will be introduced from 2013. Under the new scheme, all aspirants will have to take two exams - JEE main and JEE advanced - to be held on the same day. The aspirant's scores in these 2 exams will determine whether he or she is eligible for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), NIITs or IIITs, or other state-funded institutions. For admission to IITs, 50% weightage will be given to the class XIIth results, while for centrally funded institutions which include NIITs and IIITs, it will be 40%. The new structure has met stiff opposition from students and the IIT faculty alike. What do you think? Should class XIIth marks be given weightage in the selection process for the engineering entrances? On the other hand, a student wanting to take admission into an engineering college need no longer sit for three to five entrance tests, but just a single test will do. So for over 15 lakh students who sit for engineering entrance exams every year, can this be seen as welcome move? Team Meritnation

CBSE students may now get a chance to apply directly to foreign universities

The Central Board of Secondary Education is introducing the CBSE-International curriculum in 100 affiliated schools in India from the academic session 2013. The program is already being implemented in several schools across Singapore, Oman, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Japan and is long due to be implemented in India as well. The CBSE-i curriculum follows the international pattern and will do away with the need to opt for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) for students aspiring to go abroad after completing their class XIIth in India. The curriculum incorporates subjects like visual arts, performing arts, research, life skills and physical education besides language, science and social science. Seems like CBSE, through this program, is also looking towards the all-round holistic development of the students and not just focusing on their academic progress. CBSE-i has been a success internationally and now, with over 350 Indian schools having expressed their interest to join the program, students here should also be able to be a part of this program soon. This is an important step taken by CBSE to promote world-class education in India. Incorporating the program in all the schools will be significant in bringing the Indian school curriculum at par with that followed worldwide. Kudos to CBSE for this initiative!   Cheers! MASTER THE GENETIC CODE (CLASS XII)

Genetics is one of the most difficult but interesting subjects in biology. A good understanding of genetics requires knowledge about the structure and function of cell, cell division and reproduction. Here are a few tips on how to master this subject. The unit, Genetics and Evolution amounts to 18 marks in the biology paper. This unit consists of three chapters namely; Principles of Inheritance and Variation (Chapter 5), Molecular Basis of Inheritance (Chapter 6) and Evolution (Chapter 7). Figure out the critical aspects of genetics and try to perfect them. An analysis of previous years question papers shows that many questions are asked as it is from the NCERT textbooks. The table given below shows the exact question numbers of the questions in the question papers and the page numbers in the textbook where the answers to these questions are available.

A Good Result In Class XII Exams Becomes Important For IIT Aspirants!

There is news for all you students preparing to get into the IITs or any of the other engineering colleges! Beginning 2013, you can no longer afford to ignore your class XII exams. It has been decided that at least 40% weight age will be given to class XII marks for admission to the 15 IITs.   A common aptitude-cum-advanced knowledge test is all set to replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE in 2013. The single Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) proposed for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)/National Institutes of Technology/Indian Institute of Science Education and Research/Indian Institute of Information Technology and state government-run engineering colleges, will be based on a system of varying weight ages to class XII results.   Thus, while there would be single test for admission, class XII weight-age would have variations that would cater to the needs of the different engineering colleges and state governments. The variations in the weight-ages have been devised to deal with the different systems of evaluation in each state. Put simply, the weight age given to class XII results would be different for admission to IIT and different for other engineering colleges.   So, whatever the ‘weight-age band’ one thing is clear – good grades in school can now go a long way in realizing your career goals! Schools across have welcomed this move, as they feel that now the students will start focusing on their class XII exams and not blindly run after coaching centers that merely “equip” the candidates to crack competitive exams, caring little for concept-based teaching.   A single exam would also mean that as students you do not have to prepare for multiple exams! A step in the right direction, would you say? Cheers!
