CB1 Gallery is pleased to present Paradise Notwithstanding, Lisa Adams' first exhibition with the gallery. Lisa Adams' new paintings continue her exploration of two worlds, that of decay and that of possibility. The place that she conjures through this juxtaposition is one that comes to terms with the coexistence of the real and the ideal. "It’s a vision of imperfection’s guiding light," says the artist. There will be an artist talk on Sunday December 18, 2011, 3-5pm, followed by a book signing for her new monograph, Vicissitude of Circumstance, published by ZERO+Publishing. Just as decay and possibility come together in Lisa Adams' work for Paradise Notwithstanding, the new paintings are completely fluent in both the language of abstraction and of representation. This balance, and tension, leads viewers to explore the varied possibilities within each work. In writing about her new work, Adams says: "Though the paintings could be viewed as a puzzle, I'd rather think of them as a collection of elements that foster our ability to trust a sense of place in the world while they encourage us to question reality. I'm not interested in beauty or non-beauty, hence the title Paradise Notwithstanding. I’m interested in the complexity that won’t allow me to define what I’m looking at, and to establish a narrative; a narrative that’s shy and hidden from view and with time unpacks itself." Is the event returning to its roots of artists and galleries?

Each of the 16 never-before-seen gouaches included in Born This Way is a small gem revealing the artist unplugged, as it were. Adams lets the fortuitous bleeds and drips of a water-based medium form abstract elements in her work, which in turn inform more deliberate representational images. Plants, flowers and birds are juxtaposed with geometric shapes and fragments of an often scarred landscape forming a tension between the natural, imaginary and manmade worlds -- all of which Adams seems to effortlessly inhabit. The intimate domestic and garden setting of Offramp Gallery provides the perfect backdrop for these small works.

Fact: on June 14, 2011, I received an unsolicited email from an artist with whom I've been acquainted for years. It read, "This is a chain letter, yes, but it is also an invitation to participate in the Chain Letter show at the Shoshana Wayne Gallery. See below for details and please forward this to 10 artists you admire." It sounded fun and I liked the stated direction of artists you admire. OK, I'll bite. In the week following, I received approximately 25 additional invitations to the same exhibition. Now I really thought this might be fun.

Los Angeles based Artist Lisa Adams shares her time with Atelier Visit to discuss her work and thoughts on art. The interview and or conversation was filmed in her Los Angeles studio in May of 2010. Lisa’s haunting work of birds, nature, mysterious narratives and collisions with abstractions adorn her studio. Lisa has worked as a non-representational artist for ten years and then introduced her new visual vocabulary for which she is known today. Her current work is a beautiful struggle to be seen.
