"Second Life," is the title of Lisa Adams' show of new work at CB1 Gallery. The ambiguity between the show's title and the imagery is no coincidence. Second Life is actually the name of an online virtual world, where users, aka avatars, interact with each other in different social settings.

Each of the 16 never-before-seen gouaches included in Born This Way is a small gem revealing the artist unplugged, as it were. Adams lets the fortuitous bleeds and drips of a water-based medium form abstract elements in her work, which in turn inform more deliberate representational images. Plants, flowers and birds are juxtaposed with geometric shapes and fragments of an often scarred landscape forming a tension between the natural, imaginary and manmade worlds -- all of which Adams seems to effortlessly inhabit. The intimate domestic and garden setting of Offramp Gallery provides the perfect backdrop for these small works.

Adams’s Ineluctable was included in the handsome exhibition Prelude To An Apocalypse: Landscape in An Era of Diminished Expectations – a show which also presented admirable work by Amir H. Fallah, Wendell Gladstone, and Greg Rose. “Ineluctable” means inescapable (possibly a reference to the exhibition title). The unifying characteristic of the show seemed to be an imagined landscape set out in eupeptic color. By William Hemmerdinger
