My blog : 'Painting Barangaroo'

This blog is an in-depth painting diary. The backstory of how my paintings from "The Hungry Mile" & Miller's Point ,East Darling Harbour Wharves to " Barangaroo" are created. I was "Artist in Residence" at the "Hungry Mile", East Darling Harbour Wharves during its last 5 years as a working port. I painted on the wharves; in the midst of the bustle of cars, trucks & forklifts, from the top of the Harbour Control Tower & even from the bridge of the ships. After the last cargo ship sailed, I painted the demolition of the wharves & preparations for World Youth Day 2008. Now I am painting the demolition of the last wharves & the construction of the controversial new Barangaroo precinct. This $6 billion project is one of the largest & most important developments in the history of Australia. Join me as I explore the hidden side of Sydney through my art.

Newcastle Herald Patterns evolving Author: Jill Stowell Date: 10/10/2009 Words: 871 Source: NCH Publication: Newcastle Herald Section: H2 Page: 11

THE Maritime Centre at Honeysuckle has a large exhibition of paintings of ships and ports until October 25 by members of the Australian Society of Marine Artists. The paintings are divided into works where a passion for sail and steam has fuelled the creation of detail. This is often a recreation of the historical record of famous ships and significant voyages. Warwick Webb depicts the paddle steamer Newcastle, which carried passengers between Newcastle and Sydney until 1928. Bruno Wein celebrates the Pasha Bulker, fast becoming as legendary as the coal-carrying sailing ship Balclutha. Other works are inspired by the busy port. Jane Bennett depicts the drama of the nocturnal steelworks. Gwendoline Lewis has a fine pastel of Newcastle Harbour, concentrating on colour and light. Will this be a regular annual event?

Crowds pay homage to Queen of cruisers

Crowds pay homage to Queen of cruisers NATALIE SCHEMBRI February 26, 2009 The Queen Mary 2, all 151,000-plus tonnes of her, eased majestically into a berth at the Garden Island naval base at first light on Thursday, watched by hundreds of spectators. On its second visit to Australia, the Cunard liner - measuring 345 metres long, 62 metres high and carrying more than 2,600 passengers - didn't fail to impress. Lots of locals got up early to see the ship, following her traffic-stopping maiden visit in 2007. Sydney artist Jane Bennett sat patiently waiting for the weather to clear so that she could capture the scene in oils. She watched as the passengers disembarked, observing that it was "a wonderful way to be introduced to Australia". "Sydney is the best destination for a 'monument' such as this," she said. The Queen Mary 2's colourful livery - deep red, royal blue and white - made it "fun for a painter", she said. The liner is making only a brief stop in Sydney, leaving for Tokyo at 1am (AEDT) on Friday. But she will visit again next year.

Friday 20 November 2009 - Jane Bennett Sydney artist Jane Bennett, speaks about her work capturing threatened urban landscapes. The Rocks Discovery Museum is currently showing the projected exhibition History in the making: A working harbour no more featuring the work of Jane Bennett. This series of images contrasts the modern, picture-perfect destinations of The Rocks and Millers Point against the machinery of gritty, inner city industrial areas. Award-winning artist Jane Bennett is best known for her paintings of Sydney's urban landscapes. She has held 26 solo exhibitions since 1986, and has been included in many selective group exhibitions. Bennett has won more than 120 art prizes, including the Pring Prize for Watercolour in 1990, 1995 and 1996, and the Trustees' Prize for Watercolour, Wynne Prize in 1995. In 1996, Bennett received the prestigious Marten Bequest Travelling Art Scholarship and Dyason Bequest, enabling her to travel, paint and exhibit extensively throughout Europe and the US for two years. In 1997 the Trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW awarded her a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and she received another residency at the American Academy in Rome. Renowned for her portrayal of Sydney Harbour, it was appropriate that in 2004 Bennett received the inaugural Sydney Harbour Week Award for artistic achievement. A major retrospective of Bennett's work was the signature event of the 2006 Industrial Heritage Festival of the National Trust of Australia. Bennett's work is represented in Artbank, many regional gallery and council collections, the Department of Defence, University of NSW, University of Sydney and corporate and private collections throughout Australia, the US, Europe and Asia.
