Member Jane Bennett is fast gaining international recognition for her sensitive paintings that chronicle “Pyrmont's 30 year metamorphosis from industrial wasteland to media and entertainment hub.” “I’ve been granted unprecedented access to residences & businesses, painting panoramas of the changing urban landscape from rooftops, chimneys, demolition sites and even the summit of the half completed Anzac Bridge!” she says. Many of her early paintings of Pyrmont were on display at two venues as part of the 'Sydney Open' on 7 November. Works of the second featured artist, 'Sculptor in Residence' Col Henry, and other members of the Australian Society of Marine Artists, who include Ian Hansen, John Downton & Christine Hill, will also be on display. Paintings from "The Hungry Mile" at Miller's Point to " Barangaroo" Art by Jane Bennett Jane Bennett first exhibited her works with the union as part of the 2008 Laborfest held in conjunction with the MUA Delegates' Conference at Mining and Maritime international seminar in Darling Harbour. She describes herself as Artist in Residence at the Hungry Mile, East Darling Harbour Wharves as a working port. "I painted on the wharves; in the midst of the bustle of cars,trucks & forklifts, from the top of the Harbour Control Tower & even from the bridge of the ships," she said. After the last cargo ship sailed, Jane painted the demolition of the wharves and World Youth Day 2008. Now she is painting the development of Barangaroo and the Hungry Mile commemoration of maritime history on the foreshore. This blog is an in-depth painting diary. The backstory of how my paintings from "The Hungry Mile" & Miller's Point ,East Darling Harbour Wharves to " Barangaroo" are created. I was "Artist in Residence" at the "Hungry Mile", East Darling Harbour Wharves during its last 5 years as a working port. I painted on the wharves; in the midst of the bustle of cars,trucks & forklifts, from the top of the Harbour Control Tower & even from the bridge of the ships. After the last cargo ship sailed, I painted the demolition of the wharves & preparations for World Youth Day 2008. Now I am painting the demolition of the last wharves & the construction of the controversial new Barangaroo precinct. This $6 billion project is one of the largest & most important developments in the history of Australia. Join me as I explore the hidden side of Sydney through my art.

This blog is more of a painting diary than an online gallery. Unlike many artists today, I paint 'en plein air' & this blog shares with you my works in progress & my adventures during painting them. Now half the sheds & cranes (unfortunately including Titan) have gone, & Cockatoo Island has been reincarnated as a festival venue for comedy, art & music. These are photos of paintings of Pyrmont, Sydney, NSW that I created between 1988 - 2010. I painted 'en plein air' at many locations including the roof of the Pyrmont Power Station, the CSR Refinery & CSR Distillery, the Pyrmont Goods Yard, the Waterpolice site, Jones Bay Wharf, Union Square & the ultimate studio, the top of the western pylon of the Anzac Bridge.

Closing the Gap, 1995 Separator Striking landscape painting by Jane Bennett Closing the Gap Closing the Gap, 1995Perched near the top of the western tower of ANZAC Bridge where she painted this work, Jane Bennett has captured a commanding view east across Pyrmont towards the city. Recording the closure of the two sides of the bridge in July 1995, Bennett’s painting also documents the state of development of Pyrmont at the time, now already significantly changed. The work of Sydney artist Jane Bennett (b. 1960) focuses on the industrial, almost underbelly side of Sydney. She documents disappearing industrial heritage and working harbour sites as traditional industries decline, capturing scenes of rapidly transforming urban landscapes. Bennett began painting Pyrmont in the early 1980s and has continued to record its change and development with an increasing sense of purpose. At first isolated images, her Pyrmont work has developed into an extensive narrative sequence of the abandonment, decay, destruction and reconstruction of an inner-city suburb. The acquisition of this painting continues the Library’s tradition of collecting works of art for their documentary value. Display item Closing the Gap, 1995

Bennett targets and records urban landscapes, often just before demolition or redevelopment. The collection documents construction of the Anzac Bridge, the Balmain and White Bay power stations, Cockatoo Island, cargo ships in Sydney Harbour, the last voyage of the Spirit of Tasmania; and the development of the Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo. ANDREW WEST March 24, 2010 OPPONENTS of the plan to scuttle a decommissioned navy ship off the Central Coast are mounting a last-minute campaign to overturn a decision of the federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, to approve the sinking. Yesterday the Environmental Defender's Office, acting for the No Ship Action Group, lodged an appeal with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal against Mr Garrett's decision to issue a sea dumping permit. Kirsty Ruddock, principal solicitor with the defender's office, who is running the appeal, said she was seeking an urgent decision, given the former warship HMAS Adelaide is due to be scuttled 1700 metres off the beach at Avoca Bay on Saturday morning. The Keneally government, spurred on by the commercial scuba diving industry, wants to create an artificial reef using the vessel, but some residents and environmental experts fear the ship will cause tidal problems that could reduce the size of Avoca beach by up to five metres. They also fear the potential for toxins, especially polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which were used to insulate wiring. Yesterday, as the Sydney artist Jane Bennett - who has documented on canvas the changing character of Sydney Harbour, from working port to playground of the wealthy - painted HMAS Adelaide from afar, the state Lands Minister, Tony Kelly, was on board trying to reassure the community. ''This was the pin-up ship, the navy's environmentally friendly ship, when it was built with new style paint, without lead and PCBs. We have removed any chance of there being any contaminants on the ship and undertaken a number of tests.'' He rejected claims that the vessel would damage marine life, saying the former HMAS Brisbane, sunk off the Queensland coast, was attracting 94 species of fish. But the minister conceded there had been no environmental assessment of the project, only a ''review of environmental factors'', which was a less stringent test. In its appeal, the Environmental Defender's Office cites three arguments against Mr Garrett's decision to issue the dumping permit. It says the decision ''is inconsistent with the 1996 Protocol to the Convention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, 1972'', and argues the creation of an artificial reef, using the ship, is likely to endanger the coastal environment and release PCBs, heavy metals and other toxins. The matter is scheduled to be heard by Justice Garry Downes this morning, but Ms Ruddock expects a full hearing tomorrow. While the federal Environment Department, which also inspected the ship, has issued a statement saying the vessel does not contain PCBs - which had been stripped out during work at Garden Island - the No Ship Action Group and the National Toxics Network are still worried. They say tests were conducted on only five small samples taken from the ship.

THE Maritime Centre at Honeysuckle has a large exhibition of paintings of ships and ports until October 25 by members of the Australian Society of Marine Artists. The paintings are divided into works where a passion for sail and steam has fuelled the creation of detail. This is often a recreation of the historical record of famous ships and significant voyages. Warwick Webb depicts the paddle steamer Newcastle, which carried passengers between Newcastle and Sydney until 1928. Bruno Wein celebrates the Pasha Bulker, fast becoming as legendary as the coal-carrying sailing ship Balclutha. Other works are inspired by the busy port. Jane Bennett depicts the drama of the nocturnal steelworks. Gwendoline Lewis has a fine pastel of Newcastle Harbour, concentrating on colour and light. Will this be a regular annual event?
