In Scotland, and later England, the surname of Huntley (originally Huntly) was derived from Hunting in the Leigh - which is a sort of 'meadow'. It is believed that those given this name were cunning and intelligent about their hunting methods where, instead of being out in the open fields themselves, they would hide in the forest and wait, or put out bait for, the particular game that they sought for their evening meal. Deer is said to have been a favorite for the early Huntleys (Huntlys). Settlers are later known to have successfully used trained dogs to manage livestock in their meadows. Centuries later in a strategic and cooperative move, their clan joined with and became a part of the Gordon clan. The Huntly Castle still remains in the town of Huntly, roughly halfway between Aberdeen and Inverness. The Huntly House is on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The first Huntleys to explore America are to have arrived inside the Outer Banks of North Carolina and began their expansion from the Albemarle Sound, and then selectively spread to all parts of the New World.
