Defining Appreciative Leadership

Defining Appreciative Leadership “Derived from the principles and practices of Appreciative Inquiry, appreciative leadership is a relational process for bringing out the best of people, organizations, and communities” (Whitney and Trosten-Bloom, 2003). Appreciative leadership is “a process that is uniquely affirmative. As such, it provides direction and guidance toward that which is most positive and life affirming” (Whitney, 2007b). Appreciative leadership is “the capacity to engage others in discovering, magnifying, and connecting all that is good and healthy in people and the world around them --- in such a way that deepens relatedness, inspires transformational conversations, and mobilizes cooperative action toward life affirming social innovations (Whitney and Ludema, n.d.). Appreciative leadership is “focusing on developing a positive basis for leading others in the organization” (Searle, 2000). Appreciative leaders are those who are competent in formulating an organization-wide inquiry, capable of generating hope and building employee self-worth, and responsive to the challenge of balancing continuity, transition, and change in their organizations (Zolno, 2000).

Types of Tourism - Part 19

19.       Experimental travel Experimental tourism is “a novel approach to tourism in which visitors do not visit the ordinary tourist attractions (or, at least not with the ordinary approach), but allow whim to guide them. It is an alternative form of tourism in which destinations are chosen not on their standard touristic merit but on the basis of an idea or experiment. It often involves elements of humor, serendipity, and chance" (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.,2007a).

Characteristics of Successful Ecotourism

Ecotourism is defined by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people” (Global Development Research Center, 2008; TIES, 1990). Implicit in this definition, according to TIES, are the characteristics of successful ecotourism: • Minimizes the negative impacts on nature and culture that can damage a destination • Educates the traveler on the importance of conservation • Stresses the importance of responsible business that works in cooperation with local authorities and people to meet local needs and deliver conservation benefits • Directs revenues to the conservation and management of natural and protected areas and biological diversity • Emphasizes the need for both regional tourism zoning and visitor management plans designed for regions or natural areas that are slated to become eco-destinations • Emphasizes use of environmental and social baseline studies, as well as long-term monitoring programs, to assess and minimize impacts • Maximizes economic benefit for the host country, local business and communities, particularly peoples living in and adjacent to natural and protected areas • Supports the economic empowerment of communities through training and hiring local people, paying fair wages and benefits, buying supplies locally, and supporting local ownership or joint ventures with outside business or NGO partners of tourist facilities and concessions • Ensures that tourism development does not exceed the social and environmental limits of acceptable change as determined by researchers in cooperation with local residents • Relies on infrastructure that has been developed in harmony with the environment, minimizing use of fossil fuels, conserving local plant and wildlife, and blending with the natural and cultural environment.

Types of Tourism - Part 15

15.       Ecotourism Ecotourism, also known as ecological tourism, is “a form of tourism that appeals to ecologically and socially conscious individuals. Generally speaking, ecotourism focuses on volunteering, personal growth, and learning new ways to live on the planet. It typically involves travel to destinations where flora,  fauna. and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. Ecotourism is a conceptual experience enriching those who delve into researching and understanding the environment around them. It gives us insight into our impacts as human beings, and also a greater appreciation of our own natural habitats” (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., 2008n).

Types of Tourism - Part 11

11.    Cultural tourism Cultural tourism (or culture tourism) is the “subset of tourism concerned with a country or region's culture, especially its arts.  It generally focuses on traditional communities who have diverse customs, unique form of art and distinct social practices, which basically distinguishes it from other types/forms of culture. Cultural tourism includes tourism in urban areas, particularly historic or large cities and their cultural facilities such as  museums and theaters. It can also include tourism in rural areas showcasing the traditions of indigenous cultural communities (i.e. festivals, rituals), and their values and lifestyle. It is generally agreed that cultural tourists spend substantially more than standard tourists do. This form of tourism is also becoming generally more popular throughout Europe” (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., 2008j).

4.    Archaelogical tourism Archaeotourism or archaeological tourism is “an alternative form of cultural tourism, which aims to promote the passion for historical-archaeologyand the conservation of historical sites.” “Like ecological tourism ( or ecotourism), archaeological tourism is promoted to encourage the development of cultural associations, companies, and cooperatives can be found that dedicate themselves to offer this type of service.” “Archaeological tourism can include all products associated with public archaeological promotion, including visits to archaeological sites, museums, interpretation centers, reinactment of historical occurrences, the rediscovery of native products, festivals, or theater” (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., 2008d).
