The name Banzhaf is difficult to interpret. The current spelling is not necessarily a key to the determination be earlier forms (Bantzhaff, Bantzhav, Banzhaven) not. Two possible interpretations in Vorderungrund which are described in detail in the "family book of the Banzhaf": 1. It is a name from a foreign language (possibly Slavic, Hungarian), since the ancestors of the Banzhaf in the Middle Ages might have migrated from these regions to southern Germany. 2. For an interpretation of the German language, the explanation seems possible that a Berthold (short form "Benz" or "Banz") Hafner (potter) and was the name of "Banz" and "Hafner" to Banzhaf merged, with the suffix "-er" disappeared. However, this is nowhere documented.
